Dear Families,

I hope you guys have had wonderful weeks. I feel like this week has flown by! I have soaked up my time outside and enjoyed some nice walks and bike rides. Next Friday is our field trip to Rock Bridge State Park, which will be really fun. Hopefully the weather will be nice and stay dry for us. Thank you for all you do and never hesitate to reach out with any questions.

Rock Bridge State Park Field Trip
Our field trip to Rock Bridge State Park is coming up next week on May 3rd from 8:30-1:30ish. During this field trip, we will be observing and recording weather conditions, moving throughout the four ecosystems, sharing noticings, and collecting and recording data. If it rains that day or has rained enough to make the ground too muddy (during the week), then we will be unable to attend. Hopefully, though, the weather will cooperate with us.  If we do need to cancel the trip, I will make sure to personally contact our parent volunteers.

6th Grade Open House
In the Friday Folder, there is a handout that lists the times of all the open houses for the middle schools in CPS. This would be a great time to learn more about what middle school will look like and meet the staff.

MAP Testing
We completed our MAP testing on Monday.  I appreciated students’ positive attitudes and effort during each testing session.

Math
We are continuing our work with Unit 7 this week. We have been working on identifying attributes of triangles, polygons, and quadrilaterals. We did a triangle and quadrilateral sort where we put triangles into different categories and subcategories. Along with identifying attributes and characteristics of shapes, we also have been practicing multiplying and dividing fractions. We will continue Unit 7 through the beginning of next week and then test at the end of next week.

Writing
We our continuing our argumentative essay work with traditional vs. year-long schools. This week, we researched and read articles about both traditional and year-long schools. We took notes and created a list of our top two reasons for each side. We then took a stance based off all our notes and research. Next week, we will be planning for what our paper will look like and start our thesis along with coming up with three reasons to support our argument.

Reading
We are almost done with our read aloud book Out of the Dust by Karen Hesse. As we approach the end of the book, the students are getting excited to see how it is going to end. The girl in the story experiences many hardships and at many times feels hopeless. We are getting to the turning point in the story, though, where she is seeing hope on the horizon and things are starting to turn around. The students are asking great questions and I love how engaged they are while reading the book. The skills we have been focusing on include…

Science
We finished up our Matter Unit this week. We tested on Tuesday and they received their tests back on Thursday. I was very impressed with their scores! They did very well and showed great improvement of their knowledge of matter from the very first day.
