September 24th through 28th
Keenoy Kardinal News 9-28-18
I hope that the
week treated everyone very well. I sent
the below information to families in an email on Thursday. I wanted to also include this information in
my newsletter, just in case I do not have your current contact
information. If you did not receive the
email, let me know and provide me with your correct email address. Have a wonderful week and thank you for
supporting your child and my teaching!
Below, you will
find two sign up links. Please consider
donating your time for our class/school.
It looks like we only need one more volunteer for the Fall Party on
Friday, October 26th. Thank you in
advance for your time.
The Comet Carnival is scheduled for Friday, October
12th. This date is quickly approaching,
and volunteers are needed to help with a game station that our class will be
assigned. The shifts last 30 min. and
start at 4:30 p.m. through 8:30 p.m. It
is helpful if we have two people per shift.
I have already signed up for the first time slot, so I will assist with
getting the game set up. The last shift
is usually responsible for helping put the game away. Again, thank you for considering donating
your time. This event raises a lot of
money which positively impacts students/teachers at Paxton.
The one Blues
Silent Auction donation now has a friend!
Yay! With only two donations
though, we will likely not get very many bids.
Please also consider donating a St. Louis Blues item to increase the
value of our basket. The two donations
so far are fantastic (stainless coffee mug and mini hockey goal). The class basket that has the highest silent
auction bid will win a pizza party.
THANK YOU!
Lastly, I will be sending out an email link to our
classroom blog after school today. This
is a private blog, but if you would prefer to not have a picture of your child
included, please let me know ASAP.

Kardinal of the Week:
Kameron G.
Kameron left a bit early on Friday before finishing his mini
autobiography😊 His picture and mini autobiography will be
updated on the classroom blog on Monday.
The next Kardinal of the Week is Kingston L. Please bring any
pictures or items that you would like to put on our bulletin board that is
located outside of our classroom.
Vocabulary Day Hat
Parade-Tuesday, October 16th
This will be a fun activity to help us celebrate the power
of words and Dictionary Day. Students will be selecting a word and creating a
hat. The hat will match the meaning of
the word and students are asked to design this at home. Students can use ALL of my art supplies and
parents should not have to buy ANYTHING!
More detailed information will be sent home on a separate sheet of paper
today.
Math
Our week’s focus has been on using two different strategies
for multiplying numbers. Students have practiced using the partial products
strategy as well as the traditional algorithm.
Students also used unit conversions within the U.S.
customary system to solve multistep problems.
Writing
This week we continued reading/analyzing other author’s
narratives. Our purpose is to look for
strengths/weaknesses to help us raise the quality of our own story. Students are becoming very familiar with the
personal narrative writing rubric that their papers will be scored with. Students wrote a first draft this week, and I
plan to conference with each student next week to set goals for
improvement.
Reading
Students will take a reading assessment next week to assess
their progress with the comprehension strategies that we have been focusing
on. Students will read a short story
called “Slower Than the Rest,” by Cynthia Rylant. After reading this short story, students will
answer questions that were developed to match each of the story element skills taught. The results of this assessment will help
guide my small group instruction.
Students who could use the extra help will be supported!
In our next reading unit we will be focusing on:
Context Clues
*Determining the meaning of words and or phrases as they are
used in a text, including figurative language (simile and metaphor).
*Using context to confirm or self-correct word recognition
and understanding, rereading as necessary.
Inferring
*explaining the interactions between individuals, events, ideas,
or concepts.
*Quote accurately from a text when explaining what the text
says when drawing inferences from the text)
*Determine the meaning of phrases as they are used in the
text
Theme
*Compare and contrast stories in the same genre on their
approaches to similar themes and topic
Word Study
Students took their spelling on Thursday. This test involved some words that make the
long a sound which include: a consonant e, ai, and ay. Next week we will focus on words that include
the Long E pattern (ee, ea, e consonant e).
There is a wide range of difficulty on the list of words provided to
meet each student’s spelling needs.
Science
Students learned more about the interaction with the four
spheres (geo, atmo, bio, and hydro).
Main ideas that we focused on included: ocean ecosystems, creating an
ecosystem model, oceans shaping the land, oceans influencing climate, and
landforms affecting weather patterns.
