October 22nd through 26th

Keenoy Kardinal News                                                  October 26, 2018

Dear Families,

The weeks seem to be flying by right now.  It is hard for me to believe that November is basically here!     I hope that each of the students trick-or-treating on Wednesday has fun and stays safe.  Our field trip to the Rock Bridge Planetarium was a success, and I was proud of our behavior choices.  We gave them a great impression and showed how amazing we are at Paxton Keeley.  Have a wonderful weekend and week.

Kardinal of the Week: Tony W.

Hello, my name is Tony.  I have thirteen people in my family.  I do not have any pets.  I’m eleven years old and had a birthday this week.  I do fun things every day and my friends are nice to me.  I complete my work for my teacher and my life is fun.  Everyone in my class is nice and funny.

The next Kardinal of the Week is Nick.  Please bring any pictures or items that you would like to put on our bulletin board that is located outside of our classroom.

Greatly Appreciated!
Thank you to the families that planned, organized, donated, and attended our Fall party.  Students always look forward to these parties, and they would not happen without your donated items/time.

Parent Teacher Conferences
In the Friday Folder you will find your parent-teacher conference confirmation.  Please let me know right away if you have a conflict.  Every attempt was made to honor your request.

Please Help Us Support the Food Bank-Annual Paxton Food Drive
The Paxton Keeley Food Drive for the Central MO Food Bank will be Monday, October 29th through Friday, November 2nd.

You may send in canned or boxed food items.  Examples are soup, canned vegetables or fruits, macaroni and cheese, cereal, etc. Please DO NOT send in glass items.  Please try to send in healthy foods.  You may also send a donation of money.  Checks can be made out to the Central Missouri Food Bank.  We will be having a competition among the classes.  First place overall gets a pizza party.  First place for their grade level gets either a popcorn or popsicle party.  Thank you!

Math
We continued with our Unit 3 fraction unit this week.
The focus included students learning how to:
apply their understanding of fractions as division to report remainders as fractions.
determine what to do with the remainders (ignore, round up, or report as a fraction), depending on the context of the situation.

Writing
*Most of our class finished typing their 4th Personal Narrative draft this week.  These will be shared at conferences.
*Students will complete a post-assessment for this genre of writing.
*Writing pre-assessments and their process piece will be shared during conferences.
*Our next genre of writing will be informational.

Reading
We continued to focus on inferring and using context clues to figure out the meaning of unknown words.  Students seem to be loving the book, Zach’s Lie.  I really enjoy how engaged students are during my reading.  This book requires them to make so many inferences and forces a deeper level of thinking.

Science – Earth/Space Systems
It is always very exciting for me to teach students information that they do not have a lot of background knowledge about.  I find the concepts below very interesting and love bringing them to life as much as I can.
Students should now have a solid understanding about the following:
*Reasons for the patterns of shadows.
*Reason why Columbia, MO experiences different seasons.
*Change in daylight hours from summer to winter.
*Southern Hemisphere and Northern Hemisphere being on opposite seasons.
*Moon phases and patterns.
*Reason for time zones.
I will give students a study guide late next week and they will have an entire week to study prior to the assessment.

Social Studies
Students will start learning about the New England, Southern, and Middle colonies in social studies chapters 5 and 6 next week.

Word Study
I reminded students about some common long E patterns.  We discussed that usually you will find an i before e except after c.
ie words included:  field, chief, brief
ei words included: receipt, receive, ceiling
Students are expected to study their words each week by taking their Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check page home. They completed this paper in class on Thursday.  Students will be tested over their 10 spelling words in the middle of next week.
