Keenoy Kardinal News

January 11, 2019

Dear Families,

Students really seemed to enjoy or Fine Arts Day at Hickman and Jesse Auditorium.  Remember that if your child wants to participate in band or orchestra, they need to attend one of the Try Me Out Nights listed in the Date Reminders Section of this newsletter.  If you missed the Smithton Try Me Out Night on the 10th, Gentry and Lange Middle School also offer this event next week.  A more detailed informational letter was sent home on Friday, Jan. 4th.  Have a wonderful week, enjoy the snow,  and thank you for supporting your child and my teaching.

5th Grade End of the Year Party Committee Volunteers
The fifth-grade party committee is starting to discuss plans for end of the year 5th grade party.  Mrs. Kenney (party organizer and parent from our class) would like to see if any other parents from our class would like to be involved.  A date has not been set yet for the meeting, but if you would like to participate in the planning for this party, please contact Kimberly Kenney.   Her email address is kbkenney94@gmail.com     Thank you for considering!  Without volunteers, fun events like this would not be possible😊

Keenoy Kardinals of the Week-Damontre S. and Ruth C.

Hi, my name is Ruth and I’m eleven years old.  I have four people in my family.  My mom (Rebecka), dad (Scott), brother (Micah), and obviously me.  I love singing and drawing.  I cannot wait until 6th grade but will also miss 5th grade greatly.

My name is Damontre and in my family I have nine sisters and one brother.  At recess, I enjoy playing basketball with kids in my class.  Basketball is my favorite sport.  My mom likes her job and enjoys helping people.

Next Week’s Kardinal of the Week-ME😊.  Earlier in the year, students voted that I should also participate.

 Spelling Bee
The two students who qualified for the Paxton Keeley 4th/5th Grade Annual Spelling be are Abdulrahman A. and Gracey R.  Congratulations to both students and no matter how far they advance, the Kardinals are proud of them.  They should also be proud of themselves for this accomplishment.  The Bee will be held on Wednesday, January 16th at 8:30 am in the Paxton Gym.  It was originally scheduled for 9:20 am, but the time needed to be moved up.  The winner of the building bee will go on to the city-wide bee later in the year.

 BizTown
We have not had a newsletter since our trip prior to Winter Break.  The class and I had a wonderful time on our trip.  Thank you so much for picking your child up promptly when we returned to school.  Also, a HUGE thank you to our volunteers that day.

Math
We will conclude our lessons from Unit 4 (Decimal Concepts; Coordinate Grids) next week.  The remaining lessons will focus on:

*Addition and Subtractions of Decimals with Hundredths Grids
*Decimal Addition Algorithms
*Decimal Addition Algorithms
*Addition and Subtraction of Money
*Unit Review

I plan on giving students an assessment over this unit during the week of the 22nd.

Writing
We are working on researching a charity and focusing on how to organize this information into our writing.  We will continue this work next week and start working on drafting a beginning.

Social Studies
We are nearing the end of our Revolutionary War Unit.  Students seem highly engaged during this time of the day and have especially enjoyed watching the Liberty Kids videos after the lessons.  These videos are highly informational and connect with the story lines that we are following in class.  I plan on giving students a study guide and assessing students over this unit.  The study guide will be given to students next week.

Science
We just started a fun experiment by measuring our own reaction time with a meter stick.  To make this experiment even more sophisticated, our class decided to compare 5th grade reaction times with people who are between the ages of 40-50 and our 2nd grade buddies.  Next week students will find the reaction time averages and created a graph to display their findings.  Make sure to ask your child more about the conclusion (results) of this fun experiment.  My hypothesis is that the Old People will have a much faster reaction time! :)  Old, Wise, and Fast!

Reading
I planned on giving students a reading comprehension assessment prior to break.  We ran out of time and I gave the assessment over context clues, inferring, and predicting this week instead.  These will be scored and shared with students next week.  I also plan on sharing this information with you at conferences.

The next unit of comprehension strategies will include:
*Theme
*Comparing and Contrasting
*Point of View
*Cause and Effect
*Main Idea

Word Study
We are starting back up with our word study cycle.  Students will have 10 words to study next week.  Please take some time to quiz your child from their word list.  I will have students write the list of words in their planner today.  The list focuses on words that make the long I sound unless alternative words were given.

Important Dates this Month
Jan. 15th           6:30-8:30 p.m. Gentry Band Enrollment Night
Jan. 17th           6:30-8:30 p.m. Lange Band Enrollment Night
Jan. 21st           No School/Holiday
Have a wonderful week!
                                                                                                            Sincerely,
