Keenoy Kardinal News
January 25, 2019
Dear Families,
Time seems to be
flying by right now! It is hard to
believe that the second trimester is already coming to an end soon. I will be sending home parent/teacher
conference information today and look forward to visiting with you again about
your child’s progress.
Note from Our Student Teacher-Ms. Sullivan
Dear Fifth Grader
and Family,
I am so excited to get to do my
student teaching in Mr. Keenoy’s class! I am currently a senior at Mizzou and I
will graduate in May with a degree in Elementary Education. I have been around
Paxton this whole year, but I am looking forward to being with the same class
everyday this semester. I truly cannot think of a better class to get to do my
student teaching with this semester. I am originally from Kansas City and moved
to Columbia my freshman year of college. My favorite things to do are hiking,
family time, shopping, and playing board games.
I love Paxton and I
am thankful for the opportunity to get to work with your students. I look
forward to an awesome semester!
Sincerely,
Ms.
Sullivan
Keenoy Kardinals of the Week-Russell J.
Hello, I am Russell
and I have eight people in my family (including me). I have four brothers and only one
sister. I also have pets. My family has two dogs and three cats. One of our cats is a kitten. When I am not at school I like to play video
games. My favorite types of games are virtual
reality games.
Next week’s Kardinal
of the Week-William B.
Please bring any
pictures or items that you would like to put on our bulletin board that is
located outside of our classroom.
Valentine’s Party and Exchange
Our valentine party
will be Thursday, February 14th from 2:15-3:00. Any parents that are helping with the party
may begin setting up at 2:00. Students may bring valentines for their
classmates. This is not required. However, if students choose to bring
valentines, there should be one for each student in the class. Attached to this
newsletter is a class list. While we will not decorate bags/boxes at school,
students are more than welcome to do this at home and bring to school for
exchanging valentines.
Math
Students took an
assessment over topic 4 on Wednesday.
These will be graded and shared at conferences. We will start learning
about adding, subtracting, and multiplying fractions in topic 5 today.
Science
In science, we will
finish up with our experimental design unit.
Students will conduct an experiment by testing the amount of force
needed to pull a bag of sand across three different types of surfaces. Our next unit in science will focus on
matter.
Social Studies
I’m very pleased
with the results of the Revolutionary War quiz that students took on
Thursday. I can tell that students took
advantage of using the study guide for the last week. This week we focused on the Articles of
Confederation, Constitution, and establishing a government after the
Revolutionary War. Next week students
will learn about The Early Republic in Chapter 10. This chapter focuses on The Louisiana
Purchase, War of 1812, and the Trail of Tears.
Writing
Now that students
have selected a charity to research, my lessons have focused on Organization
this week. We have looked closely at the
rubric expectations for organization. We then analyzed several non-fiction
texts to help better understand how writers organize their informational stories. I am then providing students time to research
information about their charity and take notes.
Reading
The book that I
started reading aloud is called, The Watson’s Go to Birmingham, by Christopher
Paul Curtis. I will be modeling my
thinking aloud and asking students to practice the skills taught each day
(listed below). This is one of my
absolute favorite books and has some fantastically funny parts in it. Students really seem to be enjoying the book
and sharing some good deep level thinking throughout.
