Keenoy Kardinal News                                                  November 2, 2018

Dear Families,

We have completed the first trimester of our school year.  This is so hard for me to believe.  It looks like a rainy soccer weekend in KC for the Keenoy family.  Have a wonderful weekend and thanks for all that you do.

Comet Clubs

Applications are coming home today and are due next Friday, November 9th.

Buddy Class Halloween Activity
I’m sure that your child shared with you that we got together with our 2nd grade buddies from Mrs. Gilliland’s class.   Each second-grade student wrote our 5th graders a letter a few weeks ago. Students enjoyed writing letters back to them and delivering them on Halloween.  They also played a few fun math games together.  Watching the 5th graders interact with the 2nd graders made my heart feel good.  I was so impressed that our students modeled exceptional behavior and focused totally on their buddy the entire time.  Great work!

Kardinal of the Week: Nick O.

Hello, my name is Nick and I am eleven years old.  I have one sister Abby, who’s fourteen.  We get along very well with each other.  My dad’s name is Bill and my mom’s name is Angie.  I love to play baseball and basketball.  They have always been a huge part of my life.  Another hobby of mine is video games.  I have been playing those for a long time too.  An interesting fact about me is that I am the only person in my entire family born on the west side of the Mississippi River.

The next Kardinal of the Week is Trent.  His week will be Nov. 12th through the 16th due to the short school week of the 5th.  Please bring any pictures or items that you would like to put on our bulletin board that is located outside of our classroom.

Fundraiser Pick Up has been rescheduled for Thursday, November 8 from 3:30-6:00 p.m.   Thank you for supporting our school and students!
If you ordered fundraiser items, please plan to pick up or make arrangements for someone else to get your items.  We do not have freezer space to store frozen items.

Math
This week students:
*Wrote arguments about whether fraction sums and differences make sense by reasoning about the size of the numbers in each problem.
*Use benchmarks to estimate fraction sums and differences.
*Renamed fractions and mixed numbers by making and breaking apart wholes.
Next week students will:
*Make estimates and solve fraction addition and subtraction number stories using fraction circles, drawings or number lines.
*Add fractions with unlike denominators
*Find fractions that add to a given sum and write expressions.

Writing
*Students will complete the post-assessment for this genre of writing next week.
*Their pre-assessment and process piece will be shared during conferences.
*Our next genre of writing will be informational.

Reading
We continued to focus on inferring and using context clues to figure out the meaning of unknown words.  Students seem to be loving the book, Zach’s Lie.  I really enjoy how engaged students are during my reading.  This book requires them to make so many inferences and forces a deeper level of thinking.

Science/Social Studies
My focus has been mostly on Science during this time each day.  I’ve enjoyed teaching them about Earth/Space Systems.  We are nearing the end of this unit, and study guides were given out on Thursday.  I recommended that students use good time management and study small amounts each day rather than putting off studying until the day before.  Although I do not like giving weekend homework, it would be a good idea for students to take the study guide home and look over it during the long 4-day weekend.  We will take the assessment next Thursday.  I like giving them one full week to study😊

Word Study
We started a new word study cycle on Thursday.  Students took a pre-test with words that make the long O sound.  Tests over the Long E will be given back today.
