October 8th through 12th

Keenoy Kardinal News                                                  October 12, 2018

Dear Families,

I hope that everyone had a terrific week.  Again, thank you so much for your generosity with the Paxton Carnival basket.  I’m confident that our basket will earn a high bid, which will benefit our school.  St. Louis Blues just started their season last week.   My father in law shares season tickets and I’m lucky enough to go to several games each year.  Maybe this year they will win the Stanley Cup!

Dr. Stiepleman's Visit to Room 209
The Superintendent of Columbia Public Schools stopped by our classroom recently.  He emailed me a picture and shared how impressed he was with our class during his visit.  I used to work with Dr. Stiepleman several years back and enjoyed seeing him again.

Kardinal of the Week-Ariyana B.

Hello, my name is Ariyana.  I have two brothers and one sister. My sister likes taking pictures and my brothers like basketball.  I also live with my mom, Kandas who is nice.  She likes to spoil me😊  I like being in our classroom and my teacher, Mr. Keenoy.  In my free time I like watching T.V. but I do not have a favorite show.  I also like going over to my friend’s house to play.

The next Kardinal of the Week is Darrihia C.  Please bring any pictures or items that you would like to put on our bulletin board that is located outside of our classroom.

School Pictures
School pictures were sent home yesterday.  Picture retakes are scheduled for next Thursday, October 18th.

Vocabulary Hat Day
Thank you for your assistance with the vocabulary hats.  I would like for students to bring their hat into school on Wednesday.  Next Friday, we will parade around Paxton by showing off our hats to students and adults. The creativity that students show with this project each year is amazing! Hopefully all of the 5th grade students will learn a plethora of new wordsJ

Parent Teacher Conferences
Please complete the Blue or Green conference form and return by Tuesday.  On this form, you will indicate the day and time range you prefer.  Every effort will be made to accommodate your request.

Fall Party
Thank you for those willing to volunteer time or items for our classroom party on October 26th.

Math
We are continuing our work with division. This week students:
*Solved problems with one-digit divisors (with and without remainders.
*Analyzed word problems to determine what to do with remainders depending on the context of the problem

Writing
Our focus continued to be on elaboration and craft. We also examined how to use paragraphs and dialogue in our narratives by looking at mentor texts. Our lessons this week also focused on writing an effective beginning and ending.  Next week students will write a 3rd draft, complete a final teacher conference, and write a 4th/final draft.  During this entire process, I will continue meeting with individual students to offer support, advice, and suggestions for improvement.

Reading
I was so impressed with the results of our recent story element reading assessment.  Students overall did such a wonderful job of supporting their ideas with text details.

We will continue focusing on the comprehension strategies listed below during read aloud, independent, and book group reading.
Context Clues *Determining the meaning of words and or phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative language (simile and metaphor).
*Using context to confirm or self-correct word recognition and understanding, rereading as necessary.
Inferring *explaining the interactions between individuals, events, ideas, or concepts.
*Quote accurately from a text when explaining what the text says when drawing inferences from the text)
*Determine the meaning of phrases as they are used in the text
Theme *Compare and contrast stories in the same genre on their approaches to similar themes and topics.

Social Studies-
Students will learn about European Explorers next week.

Science
We concluded our Water Planet Unit this week.  I plan on assessing students on this topic early next week.   I did not start our Space Systems Unit this week like I had originally planned.  Instead I put in a little extra time with our Water Unit.
Space Systems
*Understanding that because of gravity, everything falls downward or toward the earth’s center.
*Explaining why and how the earth, moon, and sun revolve.
*Demonstrate that the earth rotates on its axis once every 24 hours to cause day/night.
