April 8th through April 12th
Keenoy Kardinal News April 12,
2019
Dear
Families,
It
is finally starting to warm up! We have enjoying going outside for recess and
the weather being very enjoyable. I have especially loved getting to go outside
and enjoy walks and sitting outside eating ice cream when I get home from
school. MAP testing starts next week, so hopefully the weather will stay nice
so we can go outside at the end of the day as a nice break from testing. Thank
you so much for all you do and if you need anything, feel free to reach out. Have
a great weekend!
Kardinal of the Week-Jessly
L.
Hi, my name is Jessly. I have three siblings. Amy is my older
sister, then Briana is my younger sister, and I have a 3-year-old brother named
Dylan. I also have a puppy named Tarzan. My favorite book is The School for
Good and Evil. I love to read, sing, and play soccer. I love school and I'm
going to miss my class!

Nutrition
Ms.
Zapata, a nutrition specialist who works for the University of Missouri, has
come in twice to our class to talk about nutrition and safe eating habits. She
will be coming in three more times and will continue talking about nutrition
and giving the students chances to sample healthy food. In the Friday Folder,
you will see sheets each week that talk about nutrition and go along with the
lessons that she is teaching.
Rock Bridge State Park
Field Trip
Last
week you received a packet talking about the upcoming field trip to Rock Bridge
State Park on May 3rd from 8:30-1:30ish. During this field trip, we
will be observing and recording weather conditions, moving throughout the four
ecosystems, sharing noticings, and collecting and recording data. Parents are
welcome to attend. If you would like to attend, please fill out the second sheet
on the packet to mark that you are coming. Please detach the paper and return
it to the classroom by April 19th!
Internet Safety Night
Paxton
Keeley will be hosting Internet Safety Night for parents and their rising
middle schoolers on Tuesday, April 16 at 6:30 in the Media Center. Detective
Tracy Perkins will be presenting information about cyber crimes affecting
children, online predators, and what we as parents can do to protect our
children. Mr. Chris Drury, principal at Smithton Middle will also be available
to answer questions from the middle school perspective. Mrs. Rogers needs at
least 23 parents/guardians to attend in order for Det. Perkins to present.
Please email Mrs. Rogers at amrogers@cpsk12.org if you plan to attend. Fifth
graders may attend with their parents if their families so desire.
Math
Last
week, we finished up Unit 6 and took the assessment on Friday the 5th. They
were given the tests back on Wednesday, so you can review it with them. This
week, we started Unit 7. The first couple of days were reviews from previous
years, so they were able to apply their prior knowledge to the concepts. The
concepts we will be covering in Unit 7 include:
*Multiplication
of Mixed Numbers
*Hierarchy
of Triangles and Quadrilaterals
*Identifying
and Visualizing Patterns
*Rules,
Tables, and Graphs
Writing
This week we have continued our opinion writing
unit. We looked at the topic of chocolate milk in schools. Students researched
the topic, took notes, picked a stance, wrote a thesis, and then wrote one of
their body paragraphs. As we were doing this, I modeled what each of these
things would look like so they can get a better idea when they are sent off on
their own. We also practiced keeping an open mind when choosing a topic by
looking at the argument of whether or not schools should have uniforms. We
wrote down our arguments for both sides and then had a flash debate with a
partner. We practiced seeing the other side’s argument and being respectful
towards other arguments. The topic they will be doing their final opinion
writing pieces on is whether or not schools should go year-round or stick to
the traditional schedule. We will start this cycle next week with them
researching and finding trusting sources.
Reading
We
are still reading Out of the Dust by Karen Hesse. It has been enjoyable
to see the students get invested in this book and be excited to read more. We
have been focusing mostly on point of view and the different points of views
that books offer. We discussed how the point of view of Out of the Dust
is first person and the different point of views of our previous read aloud
books. Along with point of view, we also are continuing practicing these skills:
*Cause
and Effect
*Main
Idea
*Theme
Science
We
just finished our Matter Unit this week. We looked at gases and how the volume
changes as you compress air in a syringe, but the mass stays the same.
Throughout this unit, we looked at solids, liquids, and gases and how volume
and mass matters with these states of matter. We did several fun experiments
and the students really enjoyed the hands on learning through this unit.
