Keenoy Kardinal News                                                                                     April 4, 2019

Dear Families,

Hi, my name is Lauren Sullivan and I am the student teacher in the class. I will be taking over the newsletter and work habit marks this week, so if you have any questions feel free to reach out to me. I also have taken over more and more lessons, which has been so fun! When I’m not in the classroom, I keep myself busy with going on hikes and enjoying the weather that is starting to warm up. Thank you so much for all you do and if you need to reach out to me for any reason, I will include my email at the bottom of this letter. Enjoy your weekend!

Kardinal of the Week-Jessly L.
Jessly is the last Kardinal of the Week! We will include her biography next week in the newsletter.

Spring Fling
The Spring Fling is tonight at Paxton from 6-8pm. There will be a DJ, a photo booth, and refreshments will be served in the cafeteria. This is a great family event!

Rock Bridge State Park Field Trip
You should have received a packet talking about the upcoming field trip to Rock Bridge State Park on May 3rd from 8:30-1:30ish. During this field trip, we will be observing and recording weather conditions, moving throughout the four ecosystems, sharing noticings, and collecting and recording data. Parents are welcome to attend. If you would like to attend, please fill out the second sheet on the packet to mark that you are coming. Please detach the paper and return it to the classroom by April 19th!

Comet Culture Night
Join us for a night of sharing cultures with families and friends! There will be food trucks, a choir concert, an Indian Dance Troop, and much more. This event is from 6:00-8:00 pm.

Math
We just finished Unit 6 this week. We reviewed on Wednesday and Thursday and today we are testing on all the concepts from Unit 6. These concepts include:
*Multiplying and dividing decimals by powers of 10
*Line plots
*Applying volume concepts
*Division of decimals by decimals
*Division of decimals by whole numbers
*Multiplication of decimals
*Estimating decimal products and quotients

Writing
We just finished up our mini unit on Inventions. During this unit, students made a 60 second video about why the invention they selected was the most impactful to the world (since 1700). Before we left for spring break, students shared their video and voted for the top two videos in the class. Those two videos represented our class and competed against the top videos from other fifth grade classrooms. We currently have it narrowed down to the top 5 in all of fifth grade. We will have the final voting next week for the top video from all the fifth-grade classes. Since we are finished with our mini unit, we began the larger unit on argumentation writing this week. This week we have been researching whether or not we think chocolate milk should be banned in schools. We have taken a stance and now we will start writing the evidence for our stance and making a plan.

Reading
We are currently reading Out of the Dust by Karen Hesse. This novel pairs well with the informational text we just read called Children of the Dust Bowl. Both of these books talk about the Dust Bowl and the Great Depression. These books give an inside look on what it would have been like to live during the Dust Bowl. The students are enjoying using their background knowledge from Children of the Dust Bowl as we read Out of the Dust. While reading this book, we are focusing on the skills of:
*Point of View
*Cause and Effect
*Main Idea
 *Theme

Science
We are currently in our Matter Unit. We have been exploring solids, liquids, and gases through experiments. This week, we tested the difference in masses of oil vs. water. When you pour the two substances together, the oil floats to the top. We explored this concept and why this happens. Next week we will finish off the unit by exploring the characteristics of gas and experimenting with balloons and cylinders.
