Keenoy Kardinal News April
19, 2019
Dear Families,
I hope that everyone
had a terrific and healthy week. We had a week full of MAP testing and trying
to stay healthy with all the pollen coming out. I am going home to Kansas City
this weekend (where my parents live) and I am excited to hopefully go outside
and enjoy some of the trails around my house. Also, I do not watch much hockey,
but Mr. Keenoy has been keeping the class and I up to date with the Blues.
Hopefully they can pull through! Mr. Keenoy has a beard countdown on the board,
so let’s hope he can grow it the full 70 days until they win it all! Thanks for
all you do and enjoy your weekend.
Rock Bridge State Park Field Trip
Our upcoming field
trip to Rock Bridge State Park is on May 3rd from 8:30-1:30ish.
During this field trip, we will be observing and recording weather conditions,
moving throughout the four ecosystems, sharing noticings, and collecting and
recording data.
Paxton 5th Grade T-Shirts
Students voted on a
design for the fifth-grade t-shirts. I showed the students the winning design
this week that will be printed on the shirts. Each student will be given a
t-shirt at the end of the school year that is paid for by the PTA. More
information will be sent out regarding the shirts.
MAP Testing
The first week of
testing went extremely well. Thank you
for avoiding scheduling conflicts during testing. Although make up tests are allowed, it is
helpful if they can be avoided. We only
have one more testing day to go!
Monday, April 22 10:15-11:45 (ELA Sessions 2 & 3)
MAP testing is
taking up quite a bit of our afternoon time.
Once students have finished, I have given them some “down time”
afterwards. We’ve continued our writing
work with argumentative essays. I also continued
teaching Math Unit 7 (multiplication of mixed numbers and geometry) this
week. Other than some reading time after
testing, that is pretty much what we have been able to accomplish this week.
Math
We are continuing
Unit 7 working with mixed numbers and geometry. We worked on naming shapes and
sorting them based on their attributes. We did this with triangles and
quadrilaterals.
Writing
We were not able to
get to much writing this week due to MAP testing, but we did introduce the
topic of our next writing cycle. We will be deciding on whether schools should
go year-round or stick to the traditional schedule. We have talked about what
students would do if they were the superintendent of a school district. They
were given 182 school days and they were in charge of deciding how to spread
out those days across the year. This led to great discussions and students had
great ideas. Next week, we will be diving deeper into this writing cycle by
researching, reading articles, and eventually taking a stance.
