March 11th-March 15th

Keenoy Kardinal News                                      3-15-19

Dear Families,
I hope that everyone had a wonderful week. Spirit Week is next week and I’m excited to see all the fun outfits! It’s been a great week and hopefully the wind will be calmer this weekend and warmer weather comes our way. Thank you for everything that you do! Please do not ever hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns.

Spirit Week
Next week is Paxton Keeley Spirit Week! Join the adventure and help us celebrate school pride.
*Monday, March 18 – Spirit of Adventure Day (wear Paxton colors)
*Tuesday – Tourist Day (wear beachy or vacation-type clothes, or a hat or t-shirt that represents a place students have visited or would like to visit)
*Wednesday – Shoes Your Own Adventure Day (fun, quirky, or mismatched shoes)
*Thursday – Campout Day
*Friday – Take a Break from Your Adventure Day (wear pajamas or sweats)

The next Kardinal of the Week is Reagan.

Social Studies
The class and I created a timeline of the “Big Ideas” taught this year.  We started with the Ice Age and ended with the Civil War.  This week we focused on the time period between the Constitution (1787) and the Civil War (1861).  The main events focused on during this time were the Louisiana Purchase, Westward Expansion, Trail of Tears, and Industrial Revolution.  We are currently taking a break from Social Studies and focusing on our Science “matter” unit for the next couple of weeks.  When we pick back up with socials studies, students will learn about the Civil War.

Math
Next week students will continue investigating measurements, along with multiplying and dividing decimals. The concepts that I will focus on include:
*Measuring Volume
*Multiplication of Decimals
*Division of Decimals by Whole Numbers
*Estimating Decimal Products and Quotients

Reading
We are currently reading aloud the book Children of the Dust Bowl by Jerry Stanley. We are focusing on theme and main idea. We are discussing the difference between the two and using text evidence to find the main idea and theme. I really enjoy how engaged students are during my reading. They are asking deeper level questions and making great connections.
Writing
Students are really enjoying the invention project that we started working on last week.  Students must do a lot of preparation work prior to recording their information on the iMovie App.  Each group will use the iMovie platform to practice argumentative essay style of writing.  Next week students will put their finishing touches on their 60 second video about why the invention they selected is the most impactful to the world (since 1700).   By the end of next week, students will share their video and vote for the top two videos in the class.  These two videos will represent our class and compete against the top videos from other fifth grade classrooms.  Final voting will be done after we return from Spring Break.

Science
We began our matter unit this week in science. Students explored different stations to try and come up with a definition of matter. They were excited to explore the concept and write a class rule for matter. We will be going back to that rule throughout the unit and changing it as we learn more about matter. We will be studying matter more next week through videos, experiments, and readings in the textbook.
